Like my game I ran the following day, this session was unfortunately short. However, this was primarily due to the three new people making characters. Needing a way to introduce these newcomers, I explained that they were part of a merchant caravan travelling from Winterhaven to Fallcrest. Though the merchants have heard the bandit threat had ended, there were those who did not want to take any chances and hired on mercenaries. Unfortunately, the merchant’s fears were confirmed as the caravan was ambushed and everyone was either captured or killed.
The three survivors, Talvi (Half-elf Bard), Bearclaw (Shifter Warden), and Vorrick (Eladrin Ranger – name pending) awoke to the sounds of battle. Taking a quick assessment of their surroundings, Vorrick, having shaken off the effects of the poison used to knock them out, noticed they must be underground. Slipping free of his bonds, Vorrick snatched up his nearby weapons (Being diced for by the kobolds) and headed out into the frey. Meanwhile, Talvi and Bearclaw had also woke up and began fishing for their weapons as well.
Emerging from the small room they were kept in, Vorrick noticed a small group of people (A dwarf, a human, and a halfling) fending off a large number of kobolds, whom Vorrick remembered as their attackers the night before. On a leap of faith that the others were not part of the bandits, Vorrick sided with the small band and began to help turn the tides of battle against the kobolds. Eventually, the melee was joined by Bearclaw and Talvi, who was still groggy from the previous night’s ordeal.
The session came to a close with the last of the kobolds falling and the two groups standing amongst the carnage, wondering who will make the first move.
As we wrapped up, it seemed the new players seemed to grasp the basics of the system fairly quickly though there was a number of times things needed to be looked up or explained. We even have one player who was a bit hesitant about playing 4e. I’m hoping that as we play more, he may come around.
